Potential travellers in the UK were responsible for 17 million Google searches for various holidays in August, according to the latest independent quarterly report released by specialist marketing firm, Greenlight. The results, which were published in their Holidays August 2010 report, also reveal that August’s results showed a marked increase of 78% on June’s figure of 9.5 million.

Alex Saint of online holiday experts, says: “This report used valuable industry data to find and classify over 300 of the most searched for and booked holiday destinations by UK customers on the web. The report then analysed over 3000 common keywords used by consumers to find out which was the most popular destination, and the phrase Turkey holidays proved to be the most searched for destination.”

While the report showed that Turkey was the most popular searched for holiday destination, as it accounted for 5% or 550,000 of the total search volume, it was also discovered that the term ‘holiday’ has been searched for over 4 million times, a figure which has almost doubled compared to a result of 2.2 million in May’s report. While these numbers may seem a little overwhelming, they could also be seen to be an early prediction of the most popular holiday destinations in summer 2011, according to industry experts.

Saint says: “These figures make for very promising reading, especially now, as 2010 has been a relatively difficult year for the travel industry in general. While Turkey has been a summer holiday favourite with many British holidaymakers, these figures show that bookings and enquiries for holidays to Turkey are growing. But what’s really interesting about these findings is that it shows that more and more people are booking their holidays online, as organising a break is now as easy as typing something like cheap holidays from dealchecker into a search engine.”
