HarperOne, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers, announced today that it has authorized distributors to offer the e-book version of Deepak Chopra’s controversial new book Muhammad: A Story of the Last Prophet available for sale as early as today. Additionally, it is working to accelerate the on-sale date for the physical book, which is scheduled to be fully distributed by September 21. The move comes in direct response to mainstream media and blog postings that have been eager to bring Chopra, and his portrayal of Muhammad, into the larger national conversation about the proposed mosque and Islamic community center near ground zero in New York City. The decision to release the e-book ahead of the physical book marks the first time HarperCollins has led with an e-book publication.
“We are proud to publish books that respectfully represent new perspectives on the people and events who have shaped history and our culture,” said HarperOne Senior Vice President and Publisher, Mark Tauber. “e-books offer publishers increased flexibility to bring content to readers in response to accelerated demands.”
Muhammad is the latest in Chopra’s series of “teaching novels” depicting the founders of the world’s great religions, which began with his New York Times bestsellers Buddha and Jesus. Early reviews have praised Chopra’s approach. Publishers Weekly called it, “[O]ne of the most imaginative and touching biographies of Muhammad,” and Muslim author and advocate Irshad Manji said, “Chopra’s answer is bound to challenge Muslims and non-Muslims alike.”
“Books spark conversations, and in this case a national conversation has erupted. As the publisher, we want our titles to be available in a timely manner to meet consumer demand and increase readership for our authors; digital publishing allows us to react quickly to achieve these goals,” said Michael Morrison, President and Publisher, General Books Group.
