Dental Health Care is extremely important in maintaining the health and well-being of your pets. The number one cause of heart disease and kidney disease in dogs (number three in cats) is dental tartar and periodontal disease. Millions of bacteria live in the tartar and can cause foul breath, bleeding gums, and oral infections. Additionally the bacteria enter the blood stream of the gums and spread directly to your pet's major organs causing significant disease. "So the bad news is: If you ignore your pet's teeth, he will have bad breath, dental disease, and he may eventually develop life long health problems." says Eric Gofreed, DVM.

The good news is dental disease is preventable. With appropriate home care and professional care your pet can have a healthy mouth. Annual dental cleanings are a very important part of preventative care. They not only keep your pet's mouth clean and tarter free, but also allow a professional to examine your pet's mouth and look for problems or potential problems that you may not notice. In between cleanings, you can have a home care plan to keep teeth fresh and clean. Brushing your pet's teeth at home on a regular schedule is the best way to clean teeth and gums. Be sure to use products that are specially formulated for dogs and cats. Many of the pet chews, pig ears, and other dental products are beneficial.

"We are well equipped for your pet's dental care. We have a well-trained staff and the finest veterinary equipment, including: a Cavitron (ultrasonic scaler), High Speed Rotary Scaler, and Low Speed Dental Polisher. We even do fillings and fluoride treatment when necessary. Our Laser Surgical Unit allows us remove gum tumors, perform gingivectomies, and treat many serious oral lesions that are beyond the capabilities of most veterinary hospital." comments Dr. Gofreed.

By taking the time to maintain good dental health, you may avoid some serious and expensive problems. February is National Pet Dental Health Month. To encourage dental care in pets, many animal hospitals offer discounts for dental services in February. "At the Indian Head Animal Hospital, we offer a 20% discount on all dental procedures, including the anesthesia, from January through March 31st." mentions Eric.
