Dental Assistant students volunteered time and skills to low-income children receiving free dental care.

"The students had a phenomenal time using their skills as they volunteered with dentists and helped the children of the St. Louis area."

Students studying in the Dental Assistant program at Anthem College-Maryland Heights donated their time and growing expertise to a free dental clinic sponsored by Give Kids A Smile (GKAS) held October 29 at the Saint Louis University Advanced Dental Clinic.

Each of the Anthem College Dental Assistant students provided a specific service. Some acted as event “ambassadors” and escorted children to and from dental stations, while others assisted dentists during actual procedures.

“The students had a phenomenal time using their skills as they volunteered with dentists and helped the children of the St. Louis area,” says Kimberly Kelley, who directs Anthem College’s Dental Assisting program.

This was the first time students from the Maryland Heights college have volunteered at a GKAS clinic, Kelley added. A sister campus in Fenton has participated with the group’s clinics for the past three years.

GKAS was created in 2002 by local dentists and volunteers within the St. Louis community. They provide underserved children with free and comprehensive dental care, including cleanings, fluoride treatments, sealants, x-rays―even restorations and oral surgery.

The College plans to assist in the next free clinic scheduled for February, Kelley says. For more information, visit the GKAS website at
