3M ESPE and The Dawson Academy awarded tuition scholarships to nine prosthodontic residents for The Academy’s continuing dental education course, “Functional Occlusion - From TMJ to Smile Design” held March 3-5, 2011 in St. Pete Beach, Florida. Residents had varying stories of how they came into the field of dentistry, and their motivation to pursue advanced study in prosthodontics.
Mr. Peter Golden, Professional Relations Manager said, “We at 3M ESPE have always participated in providing post graduate education on many fronts within dentistry, and have enjoyed a long association with The Dawson Academy. As one of the premier organizations offering continuing education for today’s practioner, we hope to provide a new opportunity for those that also exhibit a passion for advanced learning.”
Residents came from six different universities around the country and Puerto Rico. These universities include University of Michigan, University of Pittsburgh, The Ohio State University, University of Washington, UAB School of Dentistry and University of Puerto Rico.
Dr. Michael Scherer, a scholarship winner from The Ohio State University, said “It was a chance of a lifetime to see Dr. Dawson and The Dawson Academy faculty lecture. So many of my own pre-doctoral dental school faculty spoke highly of The Dawson Academy philosophy. We cannot wait to take the principles we learned and apply them to how we practice and ultimately teach dentistry at my school.”
Each scholarship winner was nominated by their University for demonstrating excellence and interest in restorative dentistry, had a minimum grade point average of 3.5 in dental school, and obtained written recommendations from two faculty members.
Both The Dawson Academy faculty and Golden enjoyed a dinner with the scholarship winners, where they were able to talk casually about dentistry and their lives. Dr. John Cranham, Clinical Director for The Dawson Academy, said, “I am personally thrilled that The Dawson Academy and 3M ESPE were able to provide such a wonderful experience to a great group of people.”
Dr. Michael Gurney, another scholarship winner from The Ohio State University, said, “I felt there was a great amount of emphasis on learning to treat patients the best that you can.” He also encouraged others to attend and gain new life in their pursuit for dental excellence. “Overall the experience I had was a memorable and life changing,” said Gurney.
Golden expressed that 3M eagerly anticipates that a group of very well qualified applicants will take advantage of this scholarship program next year.
