A Patient Meets the BAHCD Team

“I’m more than willing to recommend them to anyone,” says Mr. Magpanty, “because of their flexibility and their compassion. They’re out there to help people and make a difference.”

For senior citizens, as for everyone, quality and timely dental care is immensely important: a crucial component of both overall physical health and day-by-day quality of life. Yet, as most caregivers for elderly family members can attest, simply getting a senior to a dentist’s office can be a serious trial for all concerned. This is especially true for seniors who have cognitive challenges like Alzheimer’s Disease or physical mobility constraints.

Bay Area House Call Dentists (BAHCD), a San Francisco-based dental group, has been receiving growing attention—and the gratitude of their patients—for their ability to remedy for this problem. For as their name suggests, BAHCD makes house calls, providing excellent, compassionate dental care to seniors and other housebound patients right in their own homes.

The three-dentist BAHCD team is a service of the successful Blende Dental Group, headed by Dr. David Blende, a dedicated practitioner with over 20 years experience providing dental care of all kinds and a leader in the field of dental surgery.
The family members and other caregivers of BAHCD patients are not only feeling grateful, they’re telling the world about it.

“I would recommend them to anybody,” says Tonya Hartley, the daughter of 64-year old Alexandra Mara. Ms. Mara, who has advanced Alzheimer’s Disease, lives with Ms. Hartley’s sister, Tresha Black.

“My mom isn’t able to express her pain,” Ms. Hartley explains, “but when she yawned one day, I could see that she had broken her tooth. Other dentists weren’t willing to take care of her without an initial consultation and a long-term plan, but we needed help quickly. And because of my mom’s condition, it’s very hard for her to travel. Then my sister found the House Call Dentist group online. They were at our home within a couple of days and did the work right there. They were excellent, and they were very caring. They treated my mother very well. ”

BAHCD generally makes house calls with a 3-person group, including a dentist, a dental assistant and a patient care coordinator. During house calls at private residences or assisted living communities, they can perform examinations, take photos and digital x-rays, pull diseased teeth, work on broken or ill-fitting dentures and perform other emergency procedures. The key goals are to alleviate pain and identify health risks—especially active infections that travel to the rest of the body—completing as much treatment as possible on site and initiating planning for long-term treatment when necessary.

Raymond Magpanty agrees with Tonya Hartley about the value and quality of the services offered by BAHCD.

“I’m more than willing to recommend them to anyone,” says Mr. Magpanty, “because of their flexibility and their compassion. They’re out there to help people and make a difference.”

Mr. Magpanty’s mother, Juliana Magpanty, is too frail to walk and was in need of immediate dental care.

“My mother very much needs to get proper nutrition, but she couldn’t because of her dental problems,” he explains. “The House Call Dentists came to our home and helped us right away. If you talk about the quality of the work, it’s the best quality. They spent a lot of time with my mom, and they treated us with a lot of respect, concern and understanding.”

Dr. Cheryl Elacio, BAHCD’s Director of House Call Services and the dentist who worked with Ms. Magpanty and Ms. Mara, points out that family members and other caregivers for the elderly often underestimate how crucial dental health is for seniors.

“It’s so important to the everyday quality of life,” Dr. Elacio says. “Some people, like Ms. Mara, can’t even tell us when they are in pain, but they still suffer, and that keeps them from having enjoyable days. And we know that dental issues like tooth decay and gum disease are actually infections that can lead directly to more serious overall health problems.”

Like all members of the BAHCD team, Dr. Elacio feels that performing house call dentistry and serving the senior community and other special needs patients gives her work special meaning.

“We remove the barriers standing between our patients and the dental care they need,” she says. “And I love working with special needs patients, speaking with them and learning about them personally. They’re often very wise. They give me a different insight about dentistry and about life.”
