We continue to hear from individuals who have suffered metallosis, premature device failure, and other painful injuries, allegedly due to the metal-on-metal Pinnacle hip device.
New York, New York (PRWEB) December 04, 2012
DePuy Pinnacle hip lawsuits continue to mount, with hundreds of new cases filed in the federal multidistrict litigation currently underway in U.S. District Court, Northern District of Texas, Bernstein Liebhard LLP reports. According to a new Master Case List filed with the court on November 30th, more than 260 additional DePuy Pinnacle complaints have been filed since its last update on November 2nd. The number of DePuy Pinnacle hip lawsuits pending in the litigation has now surpassed 3,000. (In re: DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc. Pinnacle Hip Implant Products Liability Litigation - MDL No. 2244)
“We continue to hear from individuals who have suffered metallosis, premature device failure, and other painful injuries, allegedly due to the metal-on-metal Pinnacle hip device. It’s not surprising that the number of filings continues to grow in the federal litigation,” says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing clients allegedly injured as a result of the metal-on-metal Pinnacle hip systems. Firm partner Jeffrey S. Grand serves on the Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee in the federal DePuy Pinnacle litigation.
DePuy Pinnacle Hip Lawsuits
All of the complaints pending in the federal DePuy Pinnacle litigation involve a metal-on-metal version of the DePuy Pinnacle Hip Replacement System that utilizes the metal Ultamet liner.
Metal-on-metal hip implants such as the all-metal Pinnacle device are currently being reviewed by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), following a number of studies that indicate these devices may shed toxic metal particles into patients’ tissue and blood stream. According to the FDA, this occurrence may result in an adverse local tissue reaction, metallosis, tissue and bone death, and premature device failure. There are also some case reports in the literature of patients in which high levels of metal ions in the bloodstream may have caused other types of symptoms or illnesses elsewhere in the body, including effects on the heart, nervous system, and thyroid gland, according to the FDA.*
Victims of metal-on-metal hip implant injuries may file lawsuits against the devices’ manufacturers to seek compensation for their injuries. In addition to the DePuy Pinnacle metal-on-metal hip implant, the lawyers at Bernstein Liebhard LLP are actively filing lawsuits on behalf of people allegedly injured by the DePuy ASR hip implant. Bernstein Liebhard LLP is also closely following developments in the June 2012 Smith & Nephew metal liner recall and the July 2012 Stryker Rejuvenate recall. The firm also continues to investigate cases concerning the Biomet M2a Magnum hip implant, as well as Wright Profemur and Conserve metal hip implants.
