Dr. R. Todd Plott of Dermatology Alliance-Keller is beginning the new year with an important message: Annual exams are essential to detect skin cancer, which is highly curable if found early. To reinforce this message, Dr. Plott and his staff hosted a skin cancer awareness seminar January 18 at Timber Creek High School in Keller, Texas. The one-hour event included individual skin exams for several teachers and staff members. Due to the overwhelming response at the school, another skin cancer seminar is scheduled January 31. Dr. Plott volunteers his time as a free service through the American Academy of Dermatology.

According to Dr. Plott, the message is important because unprotected sun exposure is the number one cause of skin cancer. Dr. Plott also left skin cancer prevention literature and posters at the school to share the information with students.

"I would much rather help people prevent skin cancer than treat it," says Dr. Plott, noting he has conducted skin cancer seminars at other schools and businesses in Keller. "We are happy to donate our time to teach people about skin cancer prevention and how to conduct self examinations. It is important to know what to look for and when a biopsy is needed."

Each skin cancer exam takes approximately 10 minutes and is essential to detect any form of melanoma or suspicious lesion that requires a biopsy. With 30 years of experience and expertise as a skin care specialist, combined with 20 years of clinical research, Dr. Plott is able to provide the best possible treatment for the three main types of skin cancer: melanoma, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. In addition, he offered these skin cancer prevention tips to those in attendance:

  •     use water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more
  •     wear protective clothing
  •     seek shade
  •     avoid tanning beds

For an extra layer of protection from the sun’s damaging UV rays, Dr. Plott offers Heliocare, a dietary supplement with antioxidant properties which helps the skins ability to fight off UV rays, at Dermatology Alliance Keller.
