Despite a variety of electronic and more modern payment options, people continue to use personal checks. According to a recent Federal Reserve Payments Study, nearly 28 billion checks are written each year. This represents 22 percent of non-cash payments, making checks far from obsolete, said Michael Harrell, a spokesman for SRC Checks, a new company that sells business and personal checks online.

“Personal checks are a good payment option because they give the individual some control over their spending habits and provide a variety of other benefits like convenience and security,” Harrell explained. “From a security standpoint it’s much more difficult to use stolen checks over a stolen credit or debit card.”

Here are four reasons people continue to write checks:

Most people use a mix of payment options depending on the situation. One of the biggest reasons individuals use checks today is for convenience. Checks are a useful form of payment for small businesses like babysitters, hairdressers, landlords and more. Checks can be particularly useful when someone needs to keep a record of payment.

Banks offer security features for writing personal checks that help guard against fraud and improper use of accounts. Checks with a lock symbol printed on the front or back show that the check offers fraud protection features for both the person writing the check and their banking institution.

Individuals can also order custom checks with their photo printed on them from companies like SRC Checks, providing an additional level of security.

Float Period

There are plenty of people and small businesses that may take several days to deposit a check. Those writing checks to family, friends or businesses they work with regularly may even request the float period before the check is cashed.

Ability to Fix Errors

Writing personal and business checks can provide a paper trail that is helpful when reviewing finances and at tax time. It can also be beneficial to compare check records against banking statements to make sure everything is correct.

Automatic electronic withdrawals may not give individuals enough time to examine their bill for discrepancies and contest charges before the payment is taken from their account. Some companies even charge a service fee for paying online.

Writing checks allows individuals to review bills ahead of time and correct any problems before issuing payments, instead of waiting on companies to return money for billing errors.
