The Furniture retailer DFS, specialist in both has announced the launch of a brand new website for iPhone, BlackBerry & Android smart phones. The website has been designed to replicate many of the features of the conventional website but they are presented in a compressed format that can be quickly downloaded by a mobile phone. All the images that are available in full resolution on the main website have been downsized for optimal viewing on smart phones such as the iPhone.
DFS has previously provided access to some of their services through a mobile phone, but until the launch of the new DFS mobile website this had been limited to some basic information along with a store locator. The new mobile website presents a major leap forward and it addresses the needs of the new generation of shoppers on the move allowing them to view the entire range of products including fabric & leather sofas, corner sofas and chairs on their mobile devices.
As well as being able to view the full range of DFS furnishings, mobile shoppers are able to place an order 24 hours a day and contact a personal shopper.
This is just one of the new developments in a furniture company that is leading the way in its market. The company now boasts 74 sofa and soft furnishing stores along with five DFS dining stores and the new DFS Ireland site offering their entire range to customers in the Republic of Ireland. Since it was acquired by the private equity firm Advent International earlier this year it has put in place a plan and has found funding for an additional 25 stores which will increase its staff levels to approximately 3,500.
The company chairman Richard Baker recently announced an increase in sales of 13 % to £653m for the first half of the current year whilst many of the company’s competitors have been struggling. A unique selling point of DFS is that they manufacture around a fifth of their products which, according to Baker, means that they can tightly control costs both internally and also those associated with their external manufacturers’ supply chains.
Although Baker sees that there will be tough times ahead and that the increase in VAT after Christmas is expected to have an impact on sales, he said that he was not pessimistic about the future because the business “is in a very strong position and very profitable."
Already the order book for 2011 is matching that of 2009, so it could be that in the worst case profits will be flat. DFS is hoping that DFS mobile will boost sales to the new generation of shoppers on the move.
http://m.dfs.co.uk/ is the new DFS mobile website. The site provides all the main features of its main website in a fast loading format for customers on the move. The website is owned and operated by DFS Trading Limited, Registered office: 1 Rockingham Way, Redhouse Interchange, Adwick-le-Street, Doncaster, DN6 7NA.
