A report titled, How Obesity Threatens America's Future 2011, from the Trust for America's Health (TFAH) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) found that in 2011 adult obesity rates increased in 16 states over the previous year. Today twelve states have obesity rates over 30%. Additionally, 43 states have diabetes rates over 7 percent, and 32 have rates above 8 percent. A new way forward in diabetes prevention is needed.

Weight loss and physical activity lower the risk of diabetes by improving the body's ability to use insulin and process glucose. Participants in the lifestyle intervention group-those receiving intensive individual counseling and motivational support on effective diet, exercise, and behavior modification-reduced their risk of developing diabetes by 58 percent.
