In their current state, the endgame class-specific gear sets leave much to be desired. There are some blue items with better stats than these hard to find legendary pieces. Blizzard responded to players’ questions and complaints with a few forum posts explaining future plans for these epic items. The reason some “lesser” items can appear to be stronger than the “ultimate” end game gear is because of a hidden feature on items in Diablo 3 known as “gear level.” In the next patch Blizzard will allow the gear level of all items to be viewed when they are examined by players. The epic endgame gear pieces currently have a gear level that is lower than the highest possible level. While gear levels are not currently viewable on items, it is commonly believed that these epic item sets have a gear level of 60. There are magical and rare items from the Inferno difficulty that have a higher item level than 60, so these can have better stats.
Blizzard will be bringing in changes to the endgame set items in a future patch to make them feel as epic and strong as they should. This update is rumored to be arriving just before the big player versus player patch. These changes will cause the items to have a much higher gear levels, improving the stats dramatically. It is advised that players try and get this gear now, before the new stats hit and make the items truly great, and therefore even more valuable.
Players who have no intentions of putting the work required to complete the legendary gear sets should not fret, however. The Blizzard rep posting on their forums went on to state that there will still be a chance that rare items could have better stats than the endgame legendary and set items. A rare could get a “perfect roll” of stats that makes it stronger than any other item. It is this random factor that will make finding any yellow, brown, or green drop exciting. Identifying any of these items could potentially be a huge jackpot for a player, and rares are significantly more common than legendary or set items, so having them be valuable as well is a huge plus.
Players are all looking forward to the significant boost the endgame set items will receive. The Inferno difficulty will become much more manageable with improved gear. Those without the time or luck to accumulate the endgame sets are also relieved to hear that rare items will continue to be a viable route as well. All in all, this incoming change will be a good thing for players of all kinds.
