In Diablo 3, suiting up with the proper gear is crucial for leveling quickly and efficiently. This incredibly important feature is often overlooked by players. Players will typically make one of two mistakes when it comes to choosing the correct gear for leveling.
One common reason players don’t gear up properly is because they simply do not understand how important gear is. These are the players who don’t utilize the auction house and either buy gear from merchants or wear what they pick up from mobs or chests. While the Normal difficulty is beatable playing in this manner, it will take exponentially longer and be much less fun. Once a player like this hits Nightmare they realize how important and useful the auction house is, and often wish they had been using it all along.
Players may use the auction house and still fail to find the proper gear, though. Some players use the auction house to buy gear, but don’t buy gear that has stats conducive to rapid leveling. These players will typically be thinking too far ahead, overestimating the difficulty of the earlier stages in the game. Once you reach Inferno, it is imperative to acquire gear which has your class’s main stat, vitality, and resistances. Before you reach Inferno, your class’s main stat and vitality are fine, and before you reach hell you don’t even need vitality. Low level players may also prioritize magic find on their gear. Magic find is great, but much more useful at higher levels than lower ones.
There a few simple things one can do to speed up leveling dramatically. First, as soon as you hit level 15, get a socketed helm and place the best ruby you can find into it. Rubies, when socketed in helms, have the greatest effect on leveling of any item. This is why they are the most expensive gem in the auction house. They increase all experience gained from monster kills by a flat percentage. This can go a long way in making each kill really bump up your experience bar. The other thing you can do to increase leveling speed is purchase gear with +experience per monster kill. A full set of gear containing this stat can very easily add 150 to 200 experience points per kill. At low levels this is a truly insane amount of experience. Any time you come across a large mass of easy to kill creatures, like the masses of skeletons in the cathedral, you will be getting something like 250 experience per kill instead of the 50 they are worth. Use this to your advantage and seek out areas that have large gatherings of weaker mobs.
Utilizing the benefits of rubies and experience gear can put a player head and shoulders above the rest when it comes to leveling. Following these guidelines, a player can reach 60 well before Act III of Hell.
