Every year, hundreds of cyclists join one of the many bicycle tours through a tour company called America by Bicycle. For Dick Schoof, no tour was needed. At 70 years old, the World War II veteran set out on his bike across the United States. His journey is chronicled in “Howdy: Bike Across the USA; Age 70” (published by Trafford Publishing).

The 3,000 mile trip started June 29, 1993 in Vancouver, Wash., and ended August 27, 1993 in Oswego, N.Y. Though seeing the country was a beautiful experience, Schoof finds that the true joy came from the many people he met along the way. “If I can do it, so can you!” he exclaims. “Don’t pass up the dream of a lifetime.”

An excerpt from “Howdy”:
As we biked along the sparkling crystal waters of the Clearwater River in Idaho I glanced away from the magnetic attraction of the water and saw a beautiful flower garden being carefully tended by a woman on her knees. “What beautiful flowers and garden you have m’am,” I hollered as we rode past.

“Sure miss my garden back in New York.” Jumping up she called for us to come back stating she came from New York. And now another friendship from the seat of our bikes. Yes, all you have to do is say “howdy” as you bike along and people all over this country want to be friendly.
