Zone Diet creator Dr. Barry Sears, author of The Zone, a New York Times #1 bestseller, said America’s health care reform should start in the kitchen, and that a Perfect Nutritional Storm can be reversed through anti-inflammatory diets.

With 77 million baby boomers in America, and 33 percent of them obese, health-care costs will begin to explode next year as baby boomers begin to reach age 65.

“America is in a Perfect Nutritional Storm," said Dr. Barry Sears, bestselling author of The Zone and creator of the Zone Diet.

In a recent address at New York City's 92nd Street Y, Dr. Sears said, "Unless as a nation we have a significant reduction of low-level chronic inflammation caused by our current diets, America’s health costs will continue to spiral out of control."

"Today's primary health-care cost drivers are diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and Alzheimer's. All are ultimately caused by diet-induced silent inflammation. Health-care reform has to start in the kitchen, because of the hormonal impact of food and how these hormones can alter gene expression,” said Dr. Sears.

“America needs to reverse its current pro-inflammatory trend with anti-inflammatory diets, such as the Zone Diet," added the author of Toxic Fat, Dr. Sears’ most recent book.

Dr. Sears said, “The Perfect Nutritional Storm has been caused to a great degree by annual government subsidies of about $20 billion for corn and soybean crops, resulting in a glut of cheap refined carbohydrates and vegetable oils that are the most abundantly consumed items in the American diet. When those ingredients combine in the diet, they can increase production of toxic fat."

He told the capacity gathering at New York's 92nd Street Y that Toxic Fat can activate genes in people genetically predisposed to become obese and that approximately 33 percent of American adults have such genes.

"An article in Jan. 20, 2010, issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association indicates that nearly everyone in America who may have a genetic pre-disposition to become obese has already done so. As long as silent inflammation persists, activating these genes, they will find it very difficult to lose weight in spite of eating less or exercising more," Dr. Sears said.

"With 77 million baby boomers in America, and 33 percent of them obese, health-care costs will begin to explode next year as baby boomers begin to reach age 65."

But, Dr. Sears stressed it doesn't have to that way.

The Perfect Nutritional Storm can be reversed by addressing its root cause: Increased silent inflammation generated by increased toxic fat levels in Americans.”

The Zone Diet creator said, “The main question is whether or not Americans will follow anti-inflammatory diets for a lifetime. That is not a political question, but a personal one."

In addressing the 92nd Street Y, Dr. Sears, a research scientist, joined distinguished Y speakers including leaders of business, government, the arts and world acclaimed scientists.

Dr. Sears is an international authority on the hormonal responses induced by our diet.
