Since inception in 2009, the National Grid Small Business Energy Efficiency Program is an industry-leader in providing small business customers valuable incentives and interest-free financing for energy efficiency projects, and offered to customers throughout upstate New York, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island.
At the start of the program, National Grid contracted with SmartWatt Energy, to provide energy efficiency upgrades to customers in the central New York region. SmartWatt successfully achieved the program’s ambitious savings goals, within budget and with extremely high customer service results, and in January 2011, the company became the first Regional Program Administrator to be entrusted with additional territory—the northern New York region.
SmartWatt continued to achieve savings goals within budget, while maintaining a high level of customer service. With the entire program up for rebid for 2014, SmartWatt Energy retained its existing territories and was again the only Regional Program Administrator to be awarded additional territory, this time the Mohawk Valley region. With the latest expansion to its portfolio, SmartWatt will be the Regional Program Administrator for most of New York through 2015, streamlining program access for thousands of customers with multiple facilities throughout the state.

National Grid’s Small Business Energy Efficiency Program was developed to help small business customers afford and install energy efficient lighting and non-lighting retrofit measures. Participating businesses receive a free energy audit, a report of recommended energy efficiency improvements, and an offer from National Grid to subsidize up to 70 percent of qualifying equipment and installation costs. SmartWatt is responsible for marketing the program, performing energy audits, generating and presenting customer proposals, managing customer relationships, procuring all necessary equipment and material, installing energy efficiency measures, coordinating recycling, and resolving warranty issues. SmartWatt’s Syracuse office will continue to be the home base for the program.
