The term Digital Signage has become linked with digital out-of-home-advertising. While the out-of-home (OOH) advertising market is evolving from printed advertising to dynamic digital advertising, the market for Digital Signage stretches far beyond advertising and encompasses many types of public information displays. Current OOH flat-panel displays show everything from advertising content to way-finding to public alerts. In any public setting where information needs to be updated regularly and dynamically, digital displays are there to meet the need. Recent US government stimulus initiatives continue to move the OOH use of FPDs forward with great opportunity seen in markets such as the education and transportation infrastructures. The impact of both education and stimulus funding on indoor and outdoor digital signage will be discussed at DisplaySearch's Digital Signage Conference: Flat Panel Displays Go Out-of-Home , to be held on September 1 in San Jose, California.
During the conference, leading participants in the $90 billion flat-panel display space will address the near- and long-term outlook for this market, along with other key players in the Digital Signage community, as the industry gathers to network and collectively look at ways to accelerate this market. Specifically, this year's Digital Signage Conference agenda includes presentations by some of the top minds from the world's largest display providers, the world's largest IT companies, systems integrators, software content management companies, out-of-media companies, and financers of the new infrastructure--and all industry players in-between.
Session I: Commercial-Use Displays through the Eyes of the FPD/Hardware Industry
Kicking off this year's event, representatives from the flat panel display and hardware industries will discuss LCD advancements for Out-of-Home (OOH) Large-Format-Commercial Displays and how they compare to plasma and LCD LED solutions. In addition, the session will cover topics like synergies between PC/IT solutions and the digital signage market, the likelihood of display companies serving as media companies, and why digital signage is more than just a display.
- DisplaySearch, Chris Connery, Vice President PC and Large Format Commercial Displays
- Samsung Electronics America, Doug Albregts, Senior Vice President Sales and Marketing
- Hewlett-Packard, Andy Bowden, Strategy & Planning Director, Displays Business Unit
- LG Electronics, Jeff Dowell, Vice President Digital Signage, Business Solutions
- Cisco, Thomas Wyatt, Vice President and General Manager, Digital Media Systems and Media Processing Business Unit
Session II: New Digital Signage Business Models
Presentations during Session II will examine the Software as a Service (SaaS) business model in the digital signage industry and evaluate its potential ROI. In addition, the challenges of financing the digital signage industry via up-front capital as opposed to amortized revenue from paid content and the perceived risk factors of investments will also be examined.
- Scala, Jeff Porter, Executive Vice President
- National City Media Finance (PNC), Bob Burtis, Vice President
- Wireless Ronin Technologies, Scott Koller, Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Officer
Session III: Distribution as a Value-Add in This Emerging Market
When it comes to digital signage, many questions remain unanswered as to who does what in this still-emerging industry. Speakers representing many points in the US distribution supply chain will focus on the added advantages of IT distribution in terms of reach, logistics and focus, as well as the changing role of specialty/AV distribution. With one of its key roles in the industry being the link between the installer and hardware and software solutions, IT distributors have their finger on the pulse of what markets are hot and thus have strong visibility into such topics as where US stimulus funding is going and what opportunities it poses for digital signage. Opportunities in digital signage for education and how a specialty distribution can help reach this hot market will also be examined.
- Ingram Micro, Kevin Prewett, Vice President, Digital Signage Division & Vendor Management
- Stampede, Mark Wilkins, CEO
- Almo Professional AV, Sam Taylor, Executive Vice President and COO
- Synnex, Eddie Franklin, Associate Vice President, Public Sector
Session IV: OOH Outdoor and Indoor: Comparisons Using Today's Technology
Can current LCD and PDP commercial solutions be ruggedized for outdoor environments? What have been the successes and challenges to date? What are the challenges, opportunities and solutions for touch integration OOH? What is the impact of Windows 7? How will POS software and hardware be integrated between outdoor and indoor applications such as gas pump displays and quick service restaurants (QSRs)? During Session IV, these questions will be answered by OOH experts:
- Horizon Display, Dave Colley, Vice President, Display Solutions
- GDS-Global Display Solutions, Marco Cohen, Group Communications
- Delphi Display Systems, Ken Neeld, President & CEO
Session V: Crossing the Chasm from the Printed Page to the Digital Age
As the industry evolves from a world of printed static poster advertising to the digital age, it's important to discuss issues like the priorities of standardized metrics or the digital OOH infrastructure, the return on investment for OOH media, and whether or not digital makes sense to be implemented in new locations or if there is an ROI on retrofitting existing structures. Session V speakers include:
- JC Decaux North America, Roman Kosinov, Director of Digital Signage
- BUNN Co., Lyle Bunn, Principal & Strategy Architect
- NEC Display Solutions of America, Pierre Richer, President and COO
