Hanson Duby Personal Injury Law (http://www.HansonDuby.com), a personal injury law firm serving the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), warns drivers on Ontario’s highways and roads to be careful after a recent fatality on Highway 401 claimed the life of a young man.
On Friday, June 28, a man in his 20s was killed on Highway 401, between Highway 427 and Dixon/Martin Grove Road, when his Hyundai collided with a tractor-trailer just before 3 a.m. The OPP said construction along that stretch of Highway 401 may have been a contributing factor in the collision. “Distracted driving has become a real problem in Ontario. In 2012, distracted driving accounted for 83 fatalities on OPP-patrolled roadways, surpassing the total of impaired driving related deaths. On top of that, the OPP laid nearly 16,000 distracted driving charges last year,” says Spyros Bekiaris, a lawyer at Hanson Duby Personal Injury Law. “When it comes to distracted driving, most people think of cell phones and texting. While those are two leading causes for accidents, there are other distractions that can interfere with a driver's ability to operate a motor vehicle successfully, such as eating and drinking, looking at a map, putting on makeup, pets on a driver’s lap, and changing a radio station.” (Source: OPP press release, “OPP Launches Distracted Driving Campaign,” April 11, 2013; http://www.opp.ca/ecms/index.php?id=405&nid=964.)
Bekiaris joined Hanson Duby Personal Injury Law as an associate in September 2010. He graduated from York University with an Honours BA in political science in 2006 and from the Queen’s University Faculty of Law with a JD in 2009. He formerly worked at a boutique insurance defence firm in Toronto, representing insurance companies.
Bekiaris has appeared before the Financial Services Commission of Ontario, the Small Claims Court, the Superior Court of Justice, and the Divisional Court. Bekiaris represents clients in a variety of disputes including motor vehicle accidents, accident benefits, slips and falls, property damage claims, and victims of assault. Bekiaris is a member of the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association and the Hellenic Canadian Lawyers’ Association.
“Unfortunately, many drivers continue to ignore the rules designed to make our roads safer—this can result in serious injury or even death,” Bekiaris adds. “As a Toronto personal injury lawyer, I can tell you that there are families all over the GTA suffering from the fallout from an accident where a distracted driver was behind the wheel.”
“It only takes a split second for an accident to happen,” Bekiaris observes. “If you or a loved one has suffered an injury in a motor vehicle accident in the GTA due to the negligence of a distracted driver, it’s imperative that you contact an experienced personal injury law firm.”
