Police in St. Petersburg Florida have shot a local family dog, after the animal attacked several nearby residents, this according to the local ABC affiliate. The German Shepherd had reportedly escaped from its home at 1719 11th Ave N. at approximately 3 p.m. and bit multiple victims before one neighbor finally called the police.
One neighbor reportedly rushed to the aid of another who was being attacked by the dog, and the animal was soon located by police. Attempts to herd the dog back toward its home were unsuccessful, and according to ABC, one of the officers shot the dog after it became aggressive toward them. The dog was then taken to a nearby animal hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, German Shepherds are responsible for more dog bites than any other breed except for Pit Bulls and Rott Weilers. Additionally, children are more often the victims of dog bites than adults.
Jeff Nadrich, a personal injury lawyer who specializes in dog bite cases, recently responded to the Florida situation on his dog bite blog. According to Nadrich, "In cases like this, the dog owner is legally liable for any injuries caused by the animal. The aggressive German Shepherd in this case was not properly confined to its home, and as a result, many lives were put in danger.”
Nadrich also offers the following advice. “If you notice dogs wandering the streets in your own neighborhood, keep your distance, avoid eye contact, and do not attempt to get the dog’s attention. Dogs can be highly unpredictable, and you don’t want to take the risks. It’s especially important to keep a close watch on your kids, because more children than adults are impacted by dog bites every year.”
