Raised as a Roman Catholic but gradually disillusioned by the Church’s teachings and scriptures, author Frank Bolger Kelly became convinced that his experience would be shared by millions of religious people around the world if they too paid close attention to what their own “holy writ” was actually saying. The writing of scripture is a demonstrably human activity that cannot pretend to channel the actual “Word of God.” Undertaking a five-year study of the globe’s major religions, Kelly soon discovered that what passes as divinely inspired scripture for the most part merely “cloaks the scribal agendas and cultural designs of the world’s priestly (and virtually all-male) elites.”

With the general reader in mind, Kelly investigates the mainstream religions of the world, pointing out the creedal and ritual absurdities to be found in every faith’s set of “sacred scriptures.” The major religions under the author’s gaze include Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity (including Mormonism), and Islam. In separate chapters, Kelly further explores the peculiar relationships among scripture and three societal groupings: women, African-Americans, and the LGBT community.

Scoffing at Scripture: A Commoner Reads the World’s Holy Writ and Rejects Traditional Religion is a carefully researched exhortation to the reader to question the status quo—particularly the traditional teachings of religion—and come to his or her own conclusions about spirituality without depending upon the vested interests of religious power structures. Frank Bolger Kelly, raised Irish Catholic in the Bronx, graduated from a New England Jesuit college and then, his faith largely behind him, pursued graduate study at a prominent secular university in the Midwest. It is his hope that “the open-minded reader will draw a secularly pure, spiritual sustenance” from this, his first book.
