With recycling and energy conservation all the rage these days, Don’s Appliances launched an effort to bring those old, energy-hungry refrigerators out into the open -- with a competition to find Pittsburgh’s oldest working refrigerator.

Older refrigerators lack the state-of-the-art design that makes the most effective use of the energy required to run, so Don’s Appliances is doing its part for energy conservation by offering to swap the old for the new – a brand new Maytag Stainless Steel MBF2258WES refrigerator.

Refrigerators consume about 18 percent of all electricity in a typical home according to local energy providers, using more energy than any other single household appliance. Over the past 20 years refrigerators have become much more efficient using 60% less electricity on average than 20-year-old models. Homeowners can save nearly $300 in electricity costs annually, offsetting the cost of buying a new refrigerator.

Enter an old refrigerator – the older the better for a chance to win a new refrigerator from Don’s Appliances! Entering the contest is easy. Submit a photograph of that old refrigerator, whether it’s an old GE Monitor Top, or any old classic model, and write a short description of the appliance by clicking here to enter. The only catch, the winner has to surrender the old appliance to Don’s Appliances, where it will be put on display at the appliance center’s Canonsburg location. The new Maytag replacement for the winning refrigerator is valued at $1,649.
