The .MUSIC generic Top-Level Domain will provide a safe haven for legal music consumption and ensure monies flow to the Music Community – not to pirates or unlicensed websites.

.MUSIC (DotMusic), an organization seeking to launch “.music” as a community-based, generic Top Level Domain (gTLD) since 2005, has formally applied to ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) to become the global Music Community’s registry service for “.music.” ICANN will reveal the names of all gTLD applicants on Wednesday, June 13, after which .MUSIC will provide links to the ICANN site for public comment on its application and others at http://www.music.us/comments.

.MUSIC, founded by music and technology entrepreneur Constantine Roussos, began lobbying ICANN to establish the .music top level domain in 2005. Since then .MUSIC has amassed more than 1.5 million signatures endorsing its gTLD Initiative and the support of significant music industry players such as TuneCore, LyricFind, CD Baby, ReverbNation, The Orchard, INgrooves Fontana, SonicBids, IFACCA (a federation of over 70 government culture agencies and arts councils), IAMIC (an association of music information centers from 37 countries), music export offices, music coalitions from Canada, Brazil, France, Australia and other countries, and more (see http://www.music.us/supporters for the full list).

.MUSIC plans to operate as a neutral and transparent entity that provides the global music community with:

  •     A balanced method to authenticate registrants that encourages broad participation while assuring that ownership and control of .music domain name registrations remain in the hands of the music community.
  •     Enhanced safeguards that surpass ICANN standard registry requirements to protect intellectual property, prevent trademark infringement, eliminate piracy, cybersquatting, and other malicious conduct.
  •     Search engine-friendly, highly relevant .MUSIC websites that are optimized to rank in top search results, reducing marketing costs, simplifying search navigation and creating trusted interactions with music consumers and Internet users.
  •     Multi-stakeholder governance that serves all aspects of Community: government, digital, commercial and non-commercial constituents.

.MUSIC has partnered with Afilias, the world’s leading new gTLD DNS registry provider, to power the .MUSIC domain. Afilias also powers gTLDs such as .ORG, .INFO and .MOBI.
