Gainesville, Georgia's McKibbon Hotel Group, Inc. celebrated the opening of their newest Savannah hotel on Friday, February 20, welcoming guests to the Residence Inn by Marriott Savannah Downtown Historic District. The property is managed by Tampa, Florida-based McKibbon Hotel Management, Inc.

The Residence Inn by Marriott Savannah Downtown Historic District features unique architecture, built to resemble with historical accuracy the 19th Century workers' cottages that surrounded the Central of Georgia Railway Shops, which is now home to the Roundhouse Railroad Museum. Guest suites are tucked quaintly into four private, metal-roofed cottage structures, with the hotel featuring 109 studio, one- and two-bedroom options, all with fully-equipped kitchens. The main building, named Charlton House after 1800s Savannah Mayor Thomas Usher Pulaski Charlton, is a 3-story brick structure that houses the front desk; the gatehouse dining area, where a hot breakfast buffet is served daily and a complimentary evening guest reception is held Monday through Thursday; and a full-service bar that is open 6 days a week. Outside, brick lined paths meander gently through a serene garden, fire pit and pool area, connecting the four cottage houses--Thomas Bergen House; William Hanlon House; Benjamin Doyle House; and William Snell House. Historians with the Coastal Heritage Society helped to research the names for the cottages after the original families who lived in the two-block area known as the 'Railroad Ward' during the late 1800s.

"We worked closely with the City of Savannah and the Coastal Heritage Society in the design and construction of this beautiful property," explained John McKibbon, McKibbon Hotel Management's chief executive officer. "Our architectural team reviewed area historical records and used this research as a guideline to design a Residence Inn by Marriott that is completely unique. Guests visiting this hotel will feel like they have stepped into a small community, with convenience and privacy unlike any hotel in the Savannah area."

Leading the hotel team is veteran General Manager Donnie Morgan, who opened McKibbon's Courtyard by Marriott Savannah Downtown property in 2001 (an Opening Hotel of the Year award and President's Award winner from Marriott International). Joining the management team as Assistant General Manager, Donna Krohn relocates from the Mansion on Forsyth. The new Historic District hotel also offered promotional opportunities for two of McKibbon's Courtyard by Marriott Savannah Downtown associates, LaDean Gregory, who serves as Chief Engineer, and Wanda Stone as Executive Housekeeper. Leading Savannah's sales team is Marie Dalis-Brown, Market Director of Sales for all four McKibbon properties in Savannah.

The Residence Inn by Marriott Savannah Downtown Historic District is located at 500 West Charlton Street, just off of Martin Luther King Boulevard. The property is situated just steps away from the Coastal Heritage Society's Roundhouse Railroad Museum and Battlefield Memorial Park.

"The Coastal Heritage Society is excited to have the Residence Inn by Marriott as our new neighbor," said Scott Smith, executive director of the Coastal Heritage Society. "McKibbon Hotel Group has been a great believer in our efforts at Battlefield Park over the years, and we're thrilled to have such a unique and historically-minded inn welcoming guests to our downtown museum complex."

A formal ribbon cutting ceremony and open house is scheduled for Wednesday, April 1 at 10:00 a.m.
