Mary J. Blige Tour

Sew What? and Rent What? worked together with Daunte to create a dynamic and dramatic stage that was every bit up to the showmanship of Mary J. herself! It was a dream project for us.

If fans and critics are calling Mary J. Blige's recent US tour dazzling, they're not just talking about the concert's music - the dramatic drapery has to get some of the credit. It showcases one of the largest classic LED star field installations ever to appear in a rock and roll concert.

The tour's staging was created by acclaimed veteran show production designer, Daunte Kenner of DK Show Productions & Design. It also brought together the elite capabilities of two notable California companies: Rent What? Inc. a drapery rental firm, and their sister company, a well-known stage drapery manufacturer, Sew What? Inc.

Rent What?, who is regarded as the premier supplier of rental theatrical draperies and supplies, provided nearly 5,000 square feet of classic Starlight LED backdrops for the tour. It covered the entire rear and both sides of the concert's stage. These innovative LED backdrops with starry illumination are fitted with fields of blue-white LEDs woven into flexible, lightweight black 15 oz. Encore fabric.

In addition to the star field, the tour included a 30' x 60' Silver "Austrian" drapery used as the house drape rented from Rent What?. (The Rent What? Silver Satin series includes drapery fabric famous for its ability to cast the light beautifully with a soft yet reflective finish. Perfect for touring, this fabric is surprisingly durable as well.) The house drape allowed the opening act to perform in front, and then lifted to reveal Mary J. Blige on stage.

Sharing the stage was a massive digitally-printed city skyline, custom fabricated backdrop by Sew What?, that was created as a Broadway-esque theme for several numbers. Sew What? is well-known for its ability to custom print wide-format digital images on stage backdrops; in this case, the city skyline appeared perfectly seamless as it covered the entire stage.

In addition, Sew What? created a large white poly muslin drapery for the concert that, because of its translucent quality, allowed multiple effects by employing front or rear lighting to reveal or hide selected elements on the stage.

"This was a perfect opportunity to showcase the synergies of both our companies," said partner Megan Duckett. "Sew What? and Rent What? worked together with Daunte to create a dynamic and dramatic stage that was every bit up to the showmanship of Mary J. herself! It was a dream project for us."

The Mary J. Blige tour moves to Europe in 2011, and many of the Rent What? and Sew What? fabrics will go on the road with her, including the 5,000 sq. ft. LED star drop.
