A British biologist and American pathologist were recently awarded Spain’s Prince of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research. Dr. Jesse Stoff, immunology expert, commends the two doctors on their work in the field, which earned them such a prestigious honor.

According to a FOX News story, Gregory Winter, a British biologist, and Richard Lerner, an American pathologist, won Spain’s Prince of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research last month. They were honored for their “decisive” contributions, particularly for “obtaining antibodies of major therapeutic value,” in the field. Winter and Lerner competed against more than 40 candidates from 19 countries. Immunology specialist Dr. Jesse Stoff congratulates Winter and Lerner, noting that they have helped make significant strides in the field.

The jury, who decided on the award winner, noted that, “Winter has discovered the way to modify antibody-producing animal cells so that these can function in the human organism without being rejected.” The jury also pointed out that, “Lerner’s creation of combinational libraries of antibodies enables the construction of immunological repertoires far superior to those produced by the human immune system.” The jury continued that, “As a result of their research, it is now possible to treat degenerative diseases and tumors with specifically designed antibodies, opening up new avenues for personalized medicine, preventive medicine and other applications such as chemical catalysis.”

Dr. Jesse Stoff, a leader in the field of immunology, said Winter’s work creates many new therapeutic options for people suffering with various severe and chronic diseases, like certain cancers and autoimmune diseases. He believes that it raises hope of a cure being “just around the corner,” so to speak.

“Dr. Winter’s groundbreaking discovery of how to employ antibodies produced by non-human cells so as to avoid their destruction by the recipients’ immune system and still be therapeutically effective is a significant step forward to the field of clinical immunology,” Dr. Jesse Stoff said.

Winter said he was honored to have been selected for the award among other scientists who helped make antibodies mainstream pharmaceutical drugs. Other individuals considered for the award were geneticist Helen Hobbs, oncologist Charles Sawyers, neurologist Vladimir Hachinski and engineers Kirill Shikhaev and Victor Anokhin.

“It is my honor to accept this prestigious award with Sir Greg,” Lerner said. “This is a wonderful recognition for the field of immunochemistry and combinatorial antibody libraries and all that they have contributed to human health.”

Dr. Jesse Stoff looks forward to seeing more immunology experts win the award in the future. Past recipients have included Lawrence Roberts, Robert Kahn, Vinton Cerf, Tim Berners-Lee, Jane Goodall, Antonio Damasio and others.

Dr. Jesse Stoff is a Clinical Immunology Consultant for East End Wellness Center and S.P.R.I.M. He provides advice to several physicians and contributes to exciting new projects on the subject of immunology. Dr. Jesse Stoff has worked in immunology research and practice and has formed with medical professionals all over the world to advance the field of medicine. Currently, Dr. Jesse Stoff is assisting in the development of GRAS substances that support the immune system.
