WhoHasTheRemote.com loves a great series cliffhanger, much like the one that wrapped up season four of Drop Dead Diva. Since the program last aired in September 2012, fans have been wondering how Jane (actually Deb) will handle the second coming of Owen (actually Jane). For a while, it looked as though none of the loose ends would ever be tied for the popular Lifetime dramedy.
According to USA Today, in January, the network canceled Diva amidst budgeting disputes with Sony, which produces the series. This prompted a viral outcry from the show’s many fans, who launched a social media campaign of tweets and YouTube videos demanding that Lifetime reverse its decision. The campaign proved successful, and on March 1, the network cut a new deal with producers and green-lighted the series for a fifth season.
Drop Dead Diva has gradually grown in popularity among dish TV watchers since premiering back in the summer of 2009. The show’s premise revolves around the character of Jane Bingham, a smart, plus-sized lawyer played by actress Brooke Elliott. After meeting an untimely fate, Jane’s body is reanimated with the soul of Deb, a recently-deceased model with little going on upstairs. Through comic and tragic turns, the series uniquely demonstrates how limitations can be overcome, so that people with one set of strengths can experience things that call upon different strengths.
With occasional song and dance numbers in addition to high-profile guest stars – including Kim Kardashian and Paula Abdul – the series has had its share of budgeting issues. Nonetheless, the end of season four was one of the more intriguing series cliffhangers in recent memory. As executive producer Josh Berman told USA Today, it was heartbreaking to think that the story would not be explored any further.
Production for Drop Dead Diva is set to resume in April, with season five episodes slated for the summer.
WhoHasTheRemote.com looks forward to the laughs and thrills that are sure to be found in season five of Drop Dead Diva, and announces its support for themes that mix drama and comedy in unique, enthralling ways.
