She was very influential in me being a musician in general." says Jimmy Sullivan, 'The Rev'. "She's always pumped me up and never failed to point out to me that she thought I had a lot of potential as a drummer.

San Diego Drum and Percussion Lessons is celebrating its first year of drum lessons in San Diego. San Diego Drum and Percussion Lessons offers lessons for snare drum, drum set, and mallets (vibraphone and marimba). Percussion lessons on miscellaneous percussion instruments are also available. The lessons are taught one on one, which means that the student has the complete attention of the instructor. In addition to drum lessons, San Diego Drum and Percussion Lessons also offers percussion and drum set workshops. In November of 2011, Tim Bender, who played drums for ‘Death by Stereo’ conducted a master class on double bass drumming for a group of students from San Diego Drum and Percussion lessons.

All lessons at San Diego Drum and Percussion Lessons are taught by drummer and percussionist, Jeanette Kangas who has been teaching, performing and recording professionally for over 20 years. Ms. Kangas has her Master’s degree from California Institute of the Arts in jazz studies with a concentration on drum set and a Master’s degree from San Diego State University in jazz studies with a concentration on vibraphone. Some of the musicians that Ms. Kangas has performed and or recorded with are Ann Patterson’s Maiden Voyage, Stacey Rowells, Dizzy Gillespie, Glenn Horiuchi and Charlie Haden. Currently she is performing and recording with Nate Jarrell and Ensemble Off n On in San Diego.

Jeanette has been teaching drums and percussion, for over 20 years. Jeanette has taught percussion, jazz history and music theory at Los Angeles Harbor College and El Camino College in Los Angeles California.

Some of Ms. Kangas’ former students included Jimmy Sullivan ‘The Rev’, who played drums for Avenged Sevenfold. In Drum Magazine, November 2007, 'The Rev' had this to say about Jeanette Kangas as a teacher, "She was very influential in me being a musician in general. She's always pumped me up and never failed to point out to me that she thought I had a lot of potential as a drummer." Jeanette also taught Tim Bender, who played drums for Death by Stereo and Andy Mendoza who played drums for Ozomatli.

All styles and genres of music are taught at San Diego Drum and Percussion Lessons. Part of the learning process is for the student to bring in recordings of songs that they would like to learn. Because of her training, Jeanette is able to break down what the drummer on the recording is doing and teach it to the student. In addition to learning how to play drums to their favorite music, the student is also taught the technique required in order to execute the music on the recording.

San Diego Drum and Percussion Lessons accepts students of all ages and all levels. Currently, students range in age from 8 years to 86 years old. In celebration of the one year anniversary, San Diego Drum and Percussion Lessons is now offering, for a limited time, 20% off on the first four lessons.
