The music in this compact disc is invigorating, thought provoking, wry and deadly serious, many times in the space of just one piece.

A very special event celebrating the release of a new CD by Ensemble Off n On will take place on July 8, 2012 at 7:30pm at 3rd Space which is located at 4610 Park Blvd in San Diego CA. Ensemble Off n On features Nate Jarrell on guitar, Harley Magsino on bass and Jeanette Kangas on drums. The music created by Ensemble Off n On covers a diverse range of influences spanning from Jimi Hendrix to Sun Ra. As Rick Helzer, professor of jazz at San Diego State University, states on the liner notes for Off n On’s new CD, “The music in this compact disc is invigorating, thought provoking, wry and deadly serious, many times in the space of just one piece.” In addition to original compositions, Off n On performs very interesting arrangements of pieces by Ornette Coleman, Frank Kimbrough, Radiohead, and Nirvana. This group of musicians is about as eclectic as it gets.
Jazz vocalist Leonard Patton who has been performing and recording with such notable artists as Peter Sprague, Holly Hofman, Bob Magnusson, Darek Oles, Geoff Keezer, Josh Nelson, Mike Wofford, Bill Cunliffe, Duncan Moore, Mike Bedard (Jordin Sparks), Ken Dow, Jetro Da Silva (Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder) and countless others will also be featured at this event. Leonard will be accompanied by Ensemble Off n On.
The opening act for this evening’s program will be Harold’s Hobo (a different kind of percussion experience). Harold’s Hobo features Jeanette Kangas, who teaches drum lessons at San Diego Drum and Percussion Lessons and Tim Bender, a former student of Jeanette’s who has performed and recorded with Death by Stereo. This percussion duo explores the obscure snare drum solo compositions of Harold Firestone, a drum teacher and composer who taught drums in South Bend Indiana in the 1950’s.
