While we’re grateful that no lives were lost in this wrong-way driving accident, it serves as a reminder that alcohol can significantly impair one’s judgment. These types of incidents illustrate that negligent decisions can have severe consequences.
Providence, RI (PRWEB) December 09, 2013
Providence car accident attorney Deborah G. Kohl of the Law Offices of Deborah G. Kohl said today that a recent news story about wrong-way drivers on Rhode Island highways reveals that more work needs to be done to get intoxicated drivers off the roads.
According to the Providence Journal (“Wrong-way driver causes four-car accident on Iway bridge,” November 2), police said a New Bedford, MA woman allegedly drove the wrong way down two major Providence-area highways and caused a four-car accident in early November. (Case number: 61-2013-12359, Sixth Division District Court).
“Drivers who choose to get behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol or drugs are capable of making dangerous and seemingly nonsensical decisions that jeopardize the lives of themselves and others,” said Kohl, who represents victims of negligence and families who lost loved ones in accidents. “While we’re grateful that no lives were lost in this wrong-way driving accident, it serves as a reminder that alcohol can significantly impair one’s judgment. These types of incidents illustrate that negligent decisions can have severe consequences.”
According to the Providence Journal, police began receiving reports that a wrong-way driver was heading south in the northbound lane of Interstate 95. Shortly thereafter, the report said police began receiving calls about the same vehicle heading east on the westbound lane of Interstate 195.
The Providence Journal report said that the accident occurred on the Iway Bridge after the wrong-way driver struck an oncoming vehicle, causing two other vehicles to crash. Although none of the injuries were reported as serious, the wrong-way driver was charged with driving under the influence and reckless driving as a result of the accident.
In addition, the Providence Journal reported that later the same night, at approximately 3:30 a.m., a 24-year old Providence woman was arrested near Cranston after allegedly driving south on the northbound lane of Interstate 95. (Case number: 31-2013-10334, Third District Court).
Kohl said personal injury attorneys can help victims of accidents pursue compensation for their losses. A lawyer can help hold the negligent individual accountable and send a message that reckless actions will not be tolerated.
