With the recession hitting Britain, many people are looking for a way in which to save a few pennies, so regular visits to a favourite restaurant might perhaps no longer be a possible. However, in true British style, the nation has leaned towards another great pastime, dinner parties. In fact, in recent months there seems to have been a boost in the number of people opting to create their very own restaurant-inspired meals.
1. Food Glorious Food
As expected, food is the key ingredient to any top dinner party, with so many cookery programmes on television nowadays, there’s no lack of inspiration. Why not try something new and different that your guests may not have tasted before, or try adding a modern twist to a traditional dish such as asparagus, lemon and broad bean risotto. Whatever tasty treat you create, your guests are sure to feel spoilt rotten.
2. A Table’s for Life Not Just for Christmas
The key idea behind holding a dinner party as opposed to heading out to a favourite restaurant is to save a few pennies. However, it’s important that you have an ample sized dinner table to seat everybody comfortably. Following the popular mantra of ‘buy once and buy well’ this should be a one off investment that will last for years to come. Dunelm offers a fabulous range of dining tables, perfect for holding many a dinner party. However, if space is at a premium then a butterfly dining table would be an ideal option, it will allow space for all of your guests, whilst neatly folding away in the corner of the kitchen or dining room when not in use.
3. Create the Perfect Dining Atmosphere
It doesn't have to cost the earth to create a sophisticated and relaxed atmosphere for your dinner party. Often the main area to focus on is lighting. It is important to ensure that the room is lit well enough so that your guests can see their dinner, whilst ensuring that the light is soft and tranquil. This is easily achieved with the use of candles scattered around the room as well as on the dining table. However, if the room is still a little too dark, try introducing a floor lamp with a large light shade.
4. It’s an Adult Only Affair...
Whilst it might not be practical or fair to always ship the kids off to a Grandparent’s house for the evening, it is often a good idea to ensure that the little ones are tucked up in bed way before the guests arrive. The evening will be much more relaxed knowing that there will be no random demands or tantrums from the kids, whilst also being happy in the knowledge that they are sleeping soundly in the safety of their own beds.
5. Create a Theme
In order to recreate an authentic restaurant experience it’s important to choose a theme that is adhered to throughout the evening. If you are creating a true Italian feast then why not start off with a Spritz Aperol as an aperitif followed by some truly delicious Italian food and finished with a shot of espresso and a touch of limoncello.
