New Century, Kansas (PRWEB) November 09, 2012

DuPont Nutrition & Health today announced the results of a new clinical study on a reformulated version of HOWARU® Restore – part of the DuPont™ Danisco® range of premium probiotics – indicating a reduction in the risk of antibiotic associated diarrhea in patients undergoing antibiotic therapy.

Already a Worldwide Success

HOWARU® Restore, a unique probiotic formulation incorporated into dietary supplements already sold in 10 countries with great success, has a well-documented ability to replenish intestinal microbiota during gastrointestinal stresses. Its effectiveness was recently recognized via the results of a 2012 survey of 7,000 Australian consumers in which Faulding® Probiotics – based on HOWARU® Restore– was selected as “Product of the Year” in the Adult Health category.

New Optimized Formulation with Proven Benefits

DuPont Nutrition & Health has now introduced an optimized formulation of HOWARU® Restore comprised of four key strains from the DuPont™ Danisco® strain portfolio: Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM®, Bifidobacterium lactis Bl-04™, Bifidobacterium lactis Bi-07™, and Lactobacillus paracasei Lpc-37™.

The new formula was tested on 503 patients undergoing antibiotic therapy in a triple-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study. The HOWARU® Restore formulation demonstrated effectiveness in reducing the impact of antibiotic associated diarrhea in patients under antibiotic therapy with:

  •     A significant reduction of the number of episodes of antibiotic associated diarrhea.
  •     A significant reduction in the duration of diarrhea and the number of liquid stools.
  •     A significant reduction of diarrhea-associated symptoms such as fever, bloating and abdominal pain.

“While antibiotics are highly valuable, their use also can have detrimental effects on gut microflora, which can result in bouts of diarrhea and intestinal discomfort,” said Gregory Leyer, business development director – Consumer Healthcare. “A probiotic supplement that combats these unwanted side effects would provide welcome relief to consumers.”
