I-9 and E-Verify for Federal Contractors
On November 13, 2008 the USCIS announced that federal contractors and subcontractors will be required to begin using E-Verify starting on Jan. 15, 2009, to verify employees' eligibility to work in the United States. The E-Verify program, administered by the Department of Homeland Security, allows employers to confirm the employment eligibility of its employees using federal database information.
Companies awarded a contract with the federal government will be required to enroll in E-Verify within 30 days of the contract award date. These companies must use the E-Verify system to confirm that all of their new hires and their current employees working directly on federal contracts are authorized to legally work in the United States. The same clause will also be required in subcontracts over $3,000 for services or construction.
