UK businesses reported spending £14.2 billion on direct marketing in 2011, their expenditure increased by 7% in 2012 to nearly £15.2 billion. London based, EA Worldwide Acquisitions credit the ability to measure results and guarantee return on investment as one of the key drivers in the industries growth year on year. The DMA’s report reveals that UK companies on average attribute 23% of their total sales to direct marketing, with this rising to 32% for the travel and leisure sector, 30% for the retail and wholesale sectors and 28% for the financial services sector.

Commenting on the findings Chris Combemale, executive director of the DMA, said ‘While the UK remains mired in a protracted recession, the creative industries are among the few that are performing strongly, with direct marketing in particular making an outstanding contribution to the UK economy’.

The study also reports a projected increase in the number of people working within the direct marketing industry. In the UK, 23% of telecoms and utilities, 15% of business and professional services and 12% of financial services companies are expect to add extra DM personnel over the next 12 months.
