One Out of Two Children Not Prepared for Kindergarten: 190 Communities are Responding by Organizing Upcoming Early Learning Community Fair

Recent studies indicate that only 44% of children entering kindergarten in Washington State are adequately prepared. Faced with this challenge, communities are responding by organizing local events to bring about awareness of the value of early learning. Over 190 locations will be participating in the second annual Early Learning Community Fair, organized by the Foundation for Early Learning , beginning August 8, 2009.

This statewide celebration of early learning includes libraries, businesses and schools hosting local fair events to connect with parents and caregivers. Each community created their own way to celebrate. In Wenatchee, community members are featuring Play & Learn groups, Community Cafes, and local library activities at the annual Taste of Harvest Festival. In Skagit County, early learning coalition members are hosting a month long Getting School Ready!® campaign that highlights what parents and caregivers can do to help prepare children for kindergarten. Foundation for Early Learning, Seattle Public Libraries and Casey Family Services are partnering in Seattle to host fair events at over 30 locations throughout the city.

Barton, Executive Director of the Foundation for Early Learning. "With over 190 locations participating this year, we are sure to have a greater impact thanks to our partners."

Focused on providing parents and caregivers with local early learning resources, the Early Learning Community Fair is an annual effort organized by the Foundation for Early Learning and sponsored by The Boeing Company and Sno-Isle Libraries.
