“In nature, nothing is perfect and everything is perfect. Trees can be contorted, bent in weird ways, and they're still beautiful”- Alice Walker. It is these unusual shapes and bends that spark creative vision in the mind of Ed Waraner, Owner of Waraner Brothers Tree Service.
Ed recently featured some of his chainsaw artwork at the Clayton Art and Wine Festival in May. Waraner has large familiar wood carvings seen around town, including, “Smokey the Bear” he carved for the Sunrise Fire Station as well as the large Eagle that used to overlook Clayton Road on the hillside next to Mt. Diablo Elementary School. Included in his work are large and small carvings of rabbits, bears, and eagles.
Self taught, Ed has been doing chainsaw art since he was 18 years old. "He is very good at it,” says Daniel Moore, employee with Waraner Brothers Tree Service. Ed uses redwood salvaged from his business and several different sized chainsaws to complete his sculptures. “Each sculpture is different, they can take an hour or up to 80 hours for very detailed work,” explains Ed.
Chainsaw sculpting was a result of creativity and Ed’s familiarity with his medium, trees. He is a certified arborist and licensed contractor belonging to the International Society of Arboriculture. “Trees are my business, I have spent years studying the health and safety of trees and shrubs,” said Ed.
Waraner Brothers Tree Service has produced commissioned chainsaw art work for customers as well. “We make custom carvings such as eagles, bears, and benches and whatever a customer can dream up. They can just call to find or create the statue they want,” said Ed.
