Edmonton, Alberta Events Appeal to 20-Somethings Looking for Winter Sports & Outdoor Adventure on Their Winter Getaway

Winter sporting events offer energetic, affordable Edmonton winter vacations with plenty of nightlife and urban fun for after hours.

Edmonton Alberta (PRWEB) January 29, 2008 -- Edmonton may be best known to travelers in their twenties as the Festival City for the annual summertime blitz, but Edmonton winter vacations are equally fun for those who enjoy outdoor adventure and seasonal sports. And after a busy day outdoors, there's plenty of nightlife, downtown Edmonton attractions and shopping to entertain.

Perfect for an active vacation are several upcoming Edmonton winter getaway events. A Norwegian tradition, thousands of skiers will descend on Edmonton's Elk Island National Park--less than an hour outside the city--for The Canadian Birkebeiner Ski Festival 2008 from February 8-9, 2008. The event offers an array of races including the Birkebeiner with a Pack, the Snow Shuffle for novice skiers and more. The 17th annual Silver Skate Festival at Hawrelak Park, from February 16-17, 2008, celebrates winter in Edmonton with food, performances and the 5K and 50K Northgate Marathon and the Mammoet Edmonton Winter Triathlon.

Those who prefer go-it-on-their-own Edmonton winter vacations have access to amazing ecotourism offerings. Edmonton Canada is home to the country's largest urban park, the River Valley Park System, with 22 major parks and over 150 kilometers of trails for showshoeing and cross-country skiing. Also within the city, the Strathcona Wilderness Centre includes 550 acres of parkland forest with 12 kilometers of trails, and the Whitemud Ravine Nature Reserve provides a pristine setting for winter sports as well as a toboggan hill. A favorite of national parks in Alberta, Edmonton is less than an hour from Elk Island National Park with everything from short trails to the scenic 18.6 Wood Bison Trail.

Edmonton travel includes much more than outdoor adventure. For a well-rounded winter vacation Edmonton is home to the Edmonton Oilers NHL Hockey team. The team plays through March, with home games at Rexall Place. Offering a different type of sport, West Edmonton Mall is home to just about any indoor activity a visitor could want with 800 stores, 100 eating establishments, and nine attractions--including Galaxyland amusement park, a skating rink, World Waterpark, and a bowling alley.

Edmonton entertainment includes everything from comedy clubs to ultra-lounges, and the live music scene offers up jazz, blues, and even a dueling piano bar. In the true spirit of an Edmonton winter vacation, a number of pubs serve up a good seasonal beer best enjoyed after a day skiing--or otherwise soaking up a crisp winter day in beautiful Alberta, Canada.
