e-rater's unmatched ability to provide fast, in-depth feedback allows us to offer a powerful tool to make instructors even more productive and more effective.
Oakland, Calif. (Vocus) November 16, 2010
iParadigms, creators of Turnitin® and iThenticate® and the leader in originality checking and plagiarism prevention, has teamed up with Educational Testing Service (ETS) to integrate their e-rater® Scoring Engine technology with Turnitin’s GradeMark online paperless grading tools that allow instructors to mark and comment on student papers. e-rater uses natural language processing techniques and provides instructors with fast, diagnostic feedback on grammar, usage, mechanics and style to augment their assessment of student work.
“Turnitin users love our GradeMark tools because they save instructors time and allow them to deliver richer feedback to their students. Customers have, however, asked for a way to rapidly assess an essay for mechanics so they can focus on core issues related to content and development,” said Chris Caren, iParadigms president and CEO. “e-rater’s unmatched ability to provide fast, in-depth feedback allows us to offer a powerful tool to make instructors even more productive and more effective.”
“e-rater embodies more than 10 years of linguistic research and data about student writing,” said David Payne, ETS Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for College and Graduate Programs in the Higher Education and School Assessments Division. “By incorporating e-rater into Turnitin, another world leader in educational solutions, iParadigms is providing an unprecedented tool for instructors to deliver substantive and actionable feedback to students on their writing in any discipline.”
Turnitin includes three essential web-based tools for managing and evaluating written work: OriginalityCheck for plagiarism prevention, PeerMark for online peer reviewing, and GradeMark for paperless grading. ETS’s e-rater technology will be added to Turnitin’s GradeMark tools for commenting on, marking-up and grading papers. Instructors have consistently noted that using GradeMark has cut their paper-grading time by a third to a half while providing students richer and timelier feedback on their written work. Once e-rater is incorporated in GradeMark, students will receive even more enhanced feedback and suggestions so they can improve their skills in grammar, usage, mechanics and style.
“More than half of our instructors are outside of English and writing programs and have less time to correct the grammar and usage in student writing,” said Caren. “ETS’s technology strengthens Turnitin not just as the premier plagiarism prevention solution, but also as a solution that helps educators manage the entire process of assessing and evaluating written work across all subject areas.”
The e-rater capability will be integrated with the English versions of Turnitin in 2011.
