Education Week Announces Launch of New K-12 Professional Development Educational Resource Guide

The new biannual K-12 educational resource guide features analysis of current trends and ideas in teacher learning, as well as a professional development calendar and an exclusive directory of more than 200 providers of professional development products and services, and shows how to provide a creative curriculum.

Bethesda, Md. (PRWEB) November 13, 2007 -- Editorial Projects in Education, Inc. (EPE), the publisher of Education Week, Digital Directions, and edweek.org, is pleased to announce the launch of a new biannual K-12 educational resource guide on teacher professional development. The Teacher Professional Development Sourcebook, available free online (www.teachersourcebook.org) is dedicated exclusively to equipping educators with the tools they need to guide professional growth, whether for themselves or an entire district.

The educational resource guide features analysis of current trends and ideas in teacher learning, as well as a professional development calendar and an exclusive directory of more than 200 providers of professional development products and services, and shows how to provide a creative curriculum.

The inaugural issue of the educational resource guide, published this week, examines growing efforts to give teachers themselves a more active role in their learning experiences. The centerpiece is an extensive interview with Anne Jolly, a former Alabama teacher of the year who has become a leading voice on the use of teacher professional learning teams. Jolly defines professional learning teams as hyper-focused groups of educators working together in a structured setting to improve learning for both themselves and students in a specific area of academic need. “I see this particular approach,” she predicts, “as being the only practical and viable professional development approach we’ll have.”

Building on the theme of school-embedded staff development, the issue features a discussion with teacher leaders on “teacher-directed professional development” and a research overview detailing the latest thinking on what works in teacher learning. Other highlights include data snapshots of current practices in teacher professional development, an overview of state policy, a calendar of workshops and conferences, and a selection of recent books on instructional improvement and how to develop a creative curriculum.

On initial review of the Teacher Professional Development Sourcebook, Coleen Armstrong (nationally renowned author of The Truth About Teaching: What I Wish the Veterans Had Told Me) writes:

“I think it’s fabulous. What a tremendous first issue! Easy to navigate, good use of tabs, nice mix of readability and catalog formats. I especially enjoyed the state policy overview section. Very informative.”

Says John Norton, Co-Founder and Moderator of the Teacher Leaders Network:
“The Sourcebook is an excellent mix of editorial insights into quality professional development practices and useful information that can guide teacher leaders to resources that will advance their work."

The educational resource guide also prominently features the most complete directory of K-12 professional development products and services now available. The directory, which is organized by category and company name (and fully searchable online), brings together key information on creative curriculum and more than 200 resource providers, from larger corporations to smaller private firms. With its breadth and usability, the directory is a one-of-a-kind guide to the current staff development landscape.

The Teacher Professional Development Sourcebook is available free online at www.teachersourcebook.org. Complimentary print copies of the educa-tional resource guide are mailed to qualifying leaders in the teaching profession. To subscribe, visit www.teachermagazine.org/go/getsourcebook. Individual copies are available for $29.
