According to a recent article from Business Insider, the desire for a healthy, happy marriage is prevalent—yet despite good intentions and lofty aspirations, many marriages still fail. The reason for this, the article says, lies in the gap between good intentions and good execution. While most spouses are sincere in desiring marital happiness, many do not invest the time they ought to in their intimate life. The article suggests that a greater investment in intimacy is just what a good marriage needs to truly thrive—and also affirms the teachings of pastor and author Ed Young, Jr.
Ed Young recently released a book called Sexperiment, which underscores the biblical link between a healthy sex life and a healthy marriage. In the book, the Texas pastor encourages Christian married couples to have sex together every day for a week, and see how their communication with one another improves. “Many would argue, rightly so, that there is a lot more to marriage than just sex,” notes the pastor, “but there are also a lot of benefits.”
The same idea is expressed in the Business Insider article. “Showing your spouse that you still covet him or her, even after years of being together cannot be replaced by anything,” the article states. “Not even the daily ‘I love you’ will make up for the lack of intimacy and connecting on a bodily, sexual level.”
Of course, cultivating a healthy sex life is not without its challenges. “Intimacy is a huge issue in most marriages,” the article notes. “Sex can sometimes feel like a burden, a waste of time and energy, when there’s so much other stuff going on in your head.” But Ed Young, Jr. responds with a challenge of his own. Sexperiment challenges readers with what Ed Young calls “seven days toward lasting intimacy with you spouse.”
In his book, Pastor Ed Young points to a regular, passionate, and creative sex life as one of the keys to marital happiness. He lists numerous benefits to this kind of healthy sexual bond between husband and wife, including increased lines of communication and a keener understanding of God’s purpose for marriage.
Ed Young, Jr. is the founding pastor of Fellowship Church in Grapevine, Texas. He has written more than a dozen books, including his latest release, Sexperiment: 7 Days to Lasting Intimacy with Your Spouse. The book, written alongside his wife, Lisa, has garnered a great deal of attention for its unconventional take on the importance of sex within a marriage. While many religious leaders avoid the topic, Ed Young has preached the importance of intimacy within a marriage for years.
