A new study shows that marriage education is important for developing the communication skills necessary for maintaining an intimate marriage—confirming much of what is taught by pastor and author Ed Young, Jr.

For many, the institution of marriage is nothing new. People have been getting married for centuries, and there is nothing that modern men and women can add to it. The notion of taking a marriage counseling session, then, strikes some as silly and unnecessary. According to a new study, however, this is far from the case. Actually, proper marriage education is revealed to have a profound impact on the happiness of married couples, with as many as 27% of couples saying marriage counseling improved their lines of communication. These findings offer resounding affirmation for the teachings of Ed Young, a pastor and author whose new book is all about marriage and intimacy.

In the book, called Sexperiment, Ed Young proposes that marriage takes a great deal of work—including being deliberate in maintaining open communication and a creative, robust sex life. Writing primarily to Christian married couples, Ed Young exhorts husbands and wives to invest in understanding one another’s needs for intimacy and unity, suggesting that doing so, even for a short span of time, can offer tremendous benefits for the marriage.

The basic premise of Sexperiment is that a passionate and creative sex life is vital for sustaining marital happiness, long after the “honeymoon” stage is over. In fact, Ed Young challenges his readers to have sex together every day for a week, then to see how this intimacy has affected their marriage. The book comes with discussion topics and resources for couples to journal and to reflect on their journey together.

Ed Young’s teachings gain support from the marriage education study. The report indicates that couples that invest in communication and intimacy tend to experience significant increases in their marital satisfaction. The results reflect a wide range of ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, and also survey a wide range of marriage education curricula.

Ed Young's book, meanwhile, is geared not just toward Christian couples, but also to church-wide discussion groups and Sunday School classes.

Ed Young, Jr. is the founding pastor of Fellowship Church in Grapevine, Texas. He has written more than a dozen books, including his latest release, Sexperiment: 7 Days to Lasting Intimacy with Your Spouse. The book, written alongside wife Lisa, has garnered a great deal of attention for its unconventional take on the importance of sex within a marriage. While many religious leaders avoid the topic, Ed Young has preached the importance of intimacy within a marriage for years.
