Eileen Cunningham was born in Redhill, Surrey in 1934 and spent most of her childhood in a private boarding school in Mill Hill. After leaving at the age of 17, she served in the military for five years, before being medically discharged due to the discovery of bone complications. Cunningham then decided to take a gap year traveling around Europe. Cunningham was given a late diagnosis of the condition Osteomyelitis (in the spine).
