Electricity Wizard CEO, Alan Belkin, has announced the company’s support for the inclusion of a flyer in all electricity bills sent out for the rest of 2012. It is a move, he believes, that will help dispel much of the hysteria surrounding the impact of the carbon tax on electricity prices.

Carbon Tax Not The Main Contributor To Electricity Price Increases

“People are right to be concerned over increasing electricity prices, but it is important that they understand the real reasons behind those increases

The impact of the July 1 introduction of Australia’s Carbon Tax on has dominated the country’s media in recent weeks, most notably in relation to rising electricity prices. Electricity Wizard CEO, Alan Belkin, believes that informing the community about the components of their electricity accounts will help calm some of the hysteria.

In an attempt to do this, the Australian Government has persuaded energy providers to include a leaflet, which shows the Carbon Tax component, in every bill sent out for the remainder of the year. Mr Belkin applauds the decision, saying that transparency will help dispel the misinformation that is being touted by those with vested interests, and fueled by the popular media.

“Electricity prices in Australia were increasing long before the introduction of the Carbon Tax” said Mr Belkin. “The infrustructure needed to provide electricity throughout a country the size of Australia is a major cost factor, and makes up approximately 51% of a consumer’s electricity bill.”

The Australian Government’s CleanEnergyFuture.gov.au website reveals that the Carbon Tax will only be a 9% component of bills from July 1, and this, says Mr Belkin, is an important message for consumers caught up the the Carbon Tax media hype.

“There is no doubt that the Carbon Tax will contribute to a rise in the cost of electricity, but those with vested interests, supported by the popular media, are creating the impression that the electricity price hike is all due to the new tax” Mr Belkin explained. “This is mischievous and misleading.”

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has, just a few days after the Carbon Tax’s introduction, already taken some of the country’s most powerful businesses to task over their inflated electricity price rise claims. Two solar companies were the first to feel the wrath of the Commission, after their advertising stated that the carbon price would increase electricity prices by 20 percent in 2012 and would be a whopping 400 percent higher by 2019.

“People are right to be concerned over increasing electricity prices, but it is important that they understand the real reasons behind those increases” said Mr Belkin. “The government’s brochure will help them to do this.”

“At Electricity Wizard we are only too aware of their concerns, and this is why we offer an electricity price comparison service across our range of partners for consumers - individuals and businesses” he continued. “We have been helping consumers get better electricity prices for over 2 years and clearly, unlike others, we have not been formed to cash in on the Carbon Tax hysteria.”
