The Queensland Competition Authority has just approved off peak electricity tariff increases of up to 30 per cent, a move that both farmers and small business believe will threaten their livelihoods.

Farmers Concerned
Regardless of their location in Australia, farmers and small business owners will feel the increased charges immediately. Steve Greenwood, CEO of rural lobby group, Canefarmers, described the increase as a ‘big blow’, that could force some farmers off the land.
A recent report released by the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences, found that of all agricultural sectors, it is the Dairy industry that would be hardest hit, with many dairy farmers expected to lose $4000 a year to higher electricity costs.
