According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years. Currently, over 30% of children and adolescents are overweight or obese. In order to fight this obesity epidemic, it is essential to educate children on how to make the right decisions and develop healthy habits that will last a lifetime.

Whitsons School Nutrition is mindful of the importance of promoting healthy eating habits from a young age. Consequently, Whitsons developed the Elementary Travelling Guest Chef program. This unique nutrition education program was especially designed to introduce K-6 students to new items and flavors and to promote fruits and vegetables in a fun and exciting way. During her “Culinary Adventure,” Chef Kim Reynolds encourages the children to explore delicious, but unusual foods that they might have never tried before such as: hummus dip, fruit and spinach smoothies, Greek yogurt with fruits, etc. and explains how fruits and vegetables are “the fuel that our bodies need to run properly”, making it easier for kids to relate the concept of nutrition to their everyday life.

Chef Kim’s visits have proven to be wonderful educational events at the schools. Students, as well as teachers, look forward to her visits since Chef Kim not only talks about nutrition, but also makes it fun to eat fruits and vegetables. According to Marcia Picard, Wellness Coordinator at Fall River School District in Massachusetts, Chef Kim’s visit to her district was a great success, "I marveled at the way Chef Kim was able to engage such a large number of elementary age children at lunch time, in such a challenging setting where young attention spans are particularly short. Despite that challenge, she enthusiastically managed to deliver her message and convert so many veggie-doubters into veggie-likers. Well done, Chef Kim!"
