There is often so much media hype around Valentine’s Day that it is the perfect way for email marketers to make their content relevant and timely.

Email sending volume for the 2013 Valentine’s Day is up 16% over the previous year, according to an analysis by email marketing leader, Elite Email. The study compared emails scheduled to send on February 14, 2013 versus February 14, 2012 and included organizations based in North America only.

Historically, February 14 has always been a high volume day for marketers, however this year there has been an incredibly large spike. The increase from 2011 to 2012 was 7%, resulting in the current year witnessing more than double the volume increase.

There are a multitude of factors that could be contributing to the increase in volume. Elite Email randomly interviewed customers after they scheduled their email for February 14 to inquire why their volume was higher this year than in past years. For many, the response was that for the past 12 months they have been aggressively growing their email marketing mailing list. Several people reported that they improved the positioning of their mailing list signup form on their website in addition to including capture forms on their Facebook page. Organizations that typically operate offline, cited that they better trained their staff on how they use their email marketing software as part of the marketing mix, so they better understood the value of obtaining a customer’s email address.

Other organizations reported that in past years they used traditional paper flyers for their Valentine’s Day promotions, but have now shifted to more digital mediums such as email and social networks. The key drivers behind this change were cost savings, environmental friendliness, and measurable results.

“There is often so much media hype around Valentine’s Day that it is the perfect way for email marketers to make their content relevant and timely,” says Robert Burko, CEO of Elite Email. “It is exciting to see double-digit increases as more people turn to email marketing to get their message out.”

This year, many marketers are using their email marketing software to schedule an email to send at midnight on February 14 and are offering exclusive 24-hour only sales to drive immediate ROI.
