As reading habits continue to shift, and with online sales in e-book formats increasing, the romance novel industry is literature’s most popular genre.

In a steadily growing twist on the traditional romance genre, erotic romance novels have grown substantially in sales over the past few years. Thanks to the dramatic success of last year’s 50 Shades of Grey, the fastest-selling paperback in history, erotica has seen increasing popularity across the world.

The 50 Shades of Grey phenomenon has increased interest in the genre, by popularizing the theme and reintroducing readers to erotic literature. The erotic novel industry frequently caters to the readers desire to play out inner fantasies and other imaginative themes. Characters shift from the average boy meets girl and falls in love to the fantasies of your choosing including creature, vampires, and other paranormal elements. The genre is evolving alongside TV, film and books in which fantasy themes have become increasingly popular and are capturing large audiences at a high demand.

Many readers who have recently become hooked on this genre are now seeking out quality erotica and easy access to it. One reason this genre continues to grow is due to e-book formatting, which offers both instant availability via pdf download and the advantage of discreet reading in public. E-book downloads boasted a revenue of $3.2 billion in 2011 alone, and are expected to hit $10 billion by 2016. With e-book popularity, the genre has become less taboo and increasingly accepted in the mainstream of book publishing and reading. With sales and interest increasing, one publishing company has relaunched their website to give the readers what they want.

Ellora’s Cave—one of the most popular online booksellers of erotic literature—has just launched a new, enhanced ecommerce website, geared to selling erotic literature in e-book format in addition to paperback versions. The new website has an easy-to-use navigation so consumers can find their favorite authors, themes, or series in seconds. Users are now able to download a number of books on any device and in any format including PDF, HTML, Mobipocket, and Open eBook. Developed by ECommerce Partners, consumers can subscribe to new book releases that are categorized by series or authors, and can have the books either automatically added to their bookshelf, or receive an email alert of the new book. They feature a number of popular themes such as vampire, paranormal and shapeshifter books. Consumers are also able to read short excerpts of each book prior to purchase with the “view inside” feature.

Today, the company maintains approximately 800 writers, 21 editors, and a backlist of more than 5,000 titles. It also sponsors the annual RomantiCon festival. Ellora’s Cave has remained at the forefront of erotic literature, publishing an average of nine novels per week in more than a dozen sub-genres.

About Ellora’s Cave
Ellora’s Cave Publishing was launched in November 2000 by Tina Engler (who writes under the pseudonym Jaid Black), who previously had assessed her multiple rejections from mainstream publishing companies and decided to start her own publishing company. The decision paid off almost immediately. Ellora’s Cave quickly established itself as a leader in erotica for women with its unique combination of romance and erotica, which it brands Romantica®.
