Toronto-Based Firm To Host, Support Institution's New Learning Management System

Embanet ULC, a leading online higher education services provider in North America, and Lethbridge College (Alberta) have announced a new partnership in which the Toronto-based firm will provide data hosting and support services for the institution's new online learning management system. The partnership will provide around-the-clock help desk services to the college's 7,000 students, many of whom are taking classes and pursuing their college degrees online.

Embanet will host Lethbridge's online learning system within its state-of-the-art Internet data centre in Toronto, which features secure network infrastructure built to provide maximum reliability and redundancy, with failover to secondary systems to ensure consistent availability for students and faculty. The equipment is supported with uninterruptible power supplies, a back-up power generator, air conditioning and fire prevention systems.

The hosting partnership with Embanet addresses concerns at Lethbridge over the terms of the USA Patriot Act. Introduced in the wake of the events of September 11, 2001, the Act served as a means of increasing the U.S. government's ability to intercept and obstruct terrorist communications and activities. To this end, the Patriot Act facilitates, among other things, the ability of U.S. authorities to conduct searches and to seize or compel the disclosure of records, prompting concern among many institutions about potential conflicts with Canada's privacy laws.

Lethbridge College recently selected the ANGEL® Learning Management Suite of teaching and learning tools as its new online learning software solution. The ANGEL® platform is focused on the teaching and learning environment, enabling the efficient development, delivery and management of courses, course content and learning outcomes. ANGEL® also incorporates engaging communication and collaboration capabilities to enhance instruction and deliver leading-edge teaching and learning.

"We are in the process of bringing our faculty on board with the ANGEL® system," says Whidden, "we are also fortunate that Embanet will be available to us at anytime to support our students and faculty as we make the transition to our new learning management system."

As part of the partnership, Embanet will also support students, faculty and administrators using ANGEL at Lethbridge College through a dedicated 24/7/365 toll-free telephone number, live online chat, email and a self-help frequently asked questions support portal. Embanet's help desk call centre is located in Toronto and features support for multiple learning platforms, related third-party applications and common office productivity software.
