embdSocial has announced today, the development of a miniature cellular device targeted for integration into household electronics and hobbyist projects. The device, coined a WISP™, is smaller than a credit card and streamlines all wireless configuration and interfacing into one globally accessible web interface and REST API. The device is meant to be integrated by manufacturers or hobbyists into their electronics at the component level.
“It really is the next logical step for our everyday electronics” said Christopher Armenio, Engineer and Co-Founder of embdSocial. “Given the prevalence of wireless networks, both Wi-Fi and cellular, there is no reason why our household electronics cannot interact with us in novel and intuitive ways.” embdSocial has recently demonstrated a coffee-pot integrated with Google Calendar; brewing coffee at pre-defined times simply by creating an event and “inviting” said coffee-pot. “What really makes this system unique is the tight integration of hardware, software, and web interface” said Co-Founder Art Geigel. “Each WISP™, and by proxy, each electronic device, has a web-presence. It can send and receive e-mails and SMS texts, post to Facebook, even upload files to Dropbox. It’s all managed by our globally accessible servers through an easy-to-use web interface.”
The addition of a cellular-enabled WISP™ to the Wi-Fi enabled WISP™ product line expands the possibilities even beyond household electronics. “Imagine your car e-mailing you when a check-engine light comes on, or your car automatically opening your garage door as you pull in the driveway” said Co-Founder Abdullah Muhammad. “That’s the type of integration and innovation we are targeting; the addition of cellular capabilities will allow us to do just that.” See more WISP™-enabled projects here.
Cellular WISPs™ will be shipped to hobbyists and are designed to work out-of-the box with data plans handled by embdSocial in most cases. Manufacturers will have the option of handling data plans internally, allowing them to easily leverage the embdSocial web interface and API in their products. Wi-Fi enabled WISPs™ are scheduled for shipment in July with cellular WISPs™ available late in the third-quarter of 2012 (2012Q3).
