embdSocial has announced today, the development of a miniature cellular device targeted for integration into household electronics and hobbyist projects. The device, coined a WISP™, is smaller than a credit card and streamlines all wireless configuration and interfacing into one globally accessible web interface and REST API. The device is meant to be integrated by manufacturers or hobbyists into their electronics at the component level.

Cellular WISPs™ will be shipped to hobbyists and are designed to work out-of-the box with data plans handled by embdSocial in most cases. Manufacturers will have the option of handling data plans internally, allowing them to easily leverage the embdSocial web interface and API in their products. Wi-Fi enabled WISPs™ are scheduled for shipment in July with cellular WISPs™ available late in the third-quarter of 2012 (2012Q3).
