We offer a unique combination of consultative and project management services to help colleges and universities achieve environmental health and safety goals within their dynamic campus environments.
Arnold, MD (PRWEB) February 15, 2011
Environmental waste management company, WasteStrategies, announces its recent merger with Turning Bird Consulting to create a unified consulting and services firm with specific capabilities in Environmental Management Systems (EMSs) for college and universities. The new WasteStrategies will offer solutions that reduce costs, increase recycled waste, and move organizations and institutions toward a zero waste position by offering both consulting and implementation support.
As colleges and universities face ever-increasing scrutiny by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and other regulatory agencies, the pressure on campuses to get into compliance with environmental health and safety regulations is significant. At the same time, many campuses strive to do more than the minimum from a pollution prevention standpoint. For these campuses, an EMS is put in place to plan, implement, review, and improve processes and actions associated with the environmental impacts of campus activity.
Through the merger of Turning Bird Consulting, WasteStrategies will help campuses -- and other dynamic organizations and institutions -- address compliance, pollution prevention, and sustainability initiatives that are grounded in realistic financial and environmental targets.
John Nicklin, Managing Member of WasteStrategies, remarks, “We saw an opportunity within the college and university setting to offer a unique combination of consultative and project management services that would help colleges and universities achieve environmental health and safety goals within their dynamic campus environments. The experience of Turning Bird Consulting is a critical piece of the puzzle in terms of our ability to bring real value to these unique customers.”
Turning Bird Consulting brings extensive environmental health and safety expertise within the college and university setting. Victoria Justus, founder of Turning Bird, is well known as the originator of a professional-led peer audit program that was successfully implemented by the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania (AICUP), the Wisconsin Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (WAICU), and the South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (SCICU). This peer audit program has also been adopted in other states as a way of addressing EPA compliance and enforcement initiatives within the college and university community.
In contrast to most off- the-shelf EMSs, which are designed for industrial settings, WasteStrategies will partner with campuses to provide a framework for management of their environmental efforts in a measurable way based upon site specific information gathered through a recurring annual audit process. And beyond consulting, WasteStrategies will incorporate the physical implementation of an EMS strategy such that long term, financially viable and truly sustainable programs are possible.
