SprayCool®, a recognized leader in the development of advanced thermal management solutions for the military, announced today that it was awarded an additional contract by General Dynamics, to supply more enclosures for the Command Variant of the USMC Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle (EFV ). The units will be used on the second phase of System Development and Demonstration (SDD-2) prototype vehicles to support reliability and operational assessment testing. The vehicle milestone "C" approval is slated to follow the operational assessment testing in late 2011 followed by Low Rate Initial Production (LRIP) in fiscal year 2012 if successful. The Marine Corps plans to procure 573 vehicles, including 50 command variants by 2025.
Once deployed, the EFV will help the Marines sustain inland combat operations by maximizing tactical surprise; minimizing vulnerability on land; providing improved firepower, lethality, and survivability; and providing on-the-move command and control capabilities. The heart of the Command and Control (C2) architecture is the Multi-Processor Unit (MPU) that SprayCool is under contract to provide.
The Command variant of the USMC EFV uses high-end commercial grade embedded electronics from GE Fanuc in a SprayCool enclosure to deliver mission processing capabilities. The commercial boards used in the SprayCool MPU include five servers, a switch, an I/O board, and two expansion cards. The SprayCool MPU's are fully rugged, sealed enclosures that enable commercial boards to meet the temperature, vibration and EMI requirements of MIL-STD 810F and MIL-STD 461, and have been extensively tested in the EFV vehicle environment.
The SprayCool-provided MPU is a 9-slot direct-spray rugged enclosure that offers maximum environmental isolation and flexibility for commercial grade cards, and can operate in temperatures ranging from -40°C to +60 °C. The product is easily upgradeable, capable of accepting a wide range of card types within the same chassis, simplifying the technology refresh cycle. It also provides years of thermal headroom as the base enclosure supports 400 watts of electronics by itself, and then coupled with a heat exchanger that mounts underneath the enclosure, is capable of supporting cards sets of almost twice the power and thermal load (900 watts) as those deployed today. The EFV program has leveraged this feature during development, with new cards and capabilities added almost every 2 years.
